Smallville: Return Of The ‘Martian Manhunter’
Vancouver-lensed Smallville will include members of DC Comics “Justice Society Of America”, in the 2-part episode Society, featuring the return of actor Phil Morris as the ‘Martian Manhunter’.
The episodes, airing in 2010, were scripted by writer Geoff Johns, showcasing costumed superheroes ‘Hawkman’, ‘Doctor Fate’ and ‘Stargirl’.
‘J’onn J’onzz’, aka the ‘Martian Manhunter’, first appeared in the back-up story “The Strange Experiment of Dr. Erdel” in DC’s Detective Comics #225 (Nov. 1955), written by Joseph Samachson and illustrated by Joe Certa. The character was a green-skinned extraterrestrial humanoid from the planet Mars, pulled to earth by an experimental communication device, constructed by ‘Dr. Erdel’ that accidentally became a teleportation beam.
The shock of the close encounter killed Erdel and left J’onn with no method of returning home. He then decides to fight crime while waiting for Martian technology to advance to a stage that will enable a rescue. To that end, he adopts the identity of John Jones, a detective in ‘Apex City’.
His inhuman powers include super-strength, super-speed, invulnerability, flight, ‘Martian vision’ (seeing through solid objects, generation of optic beams of force/heat), shapeshifting, telepathy and the ability to render himself invisible.

The Japanese Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus Poster
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is the UK/British Columbia-lensed fantasy feature directed by Terry “Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas” Gilliam, written by Gilliam and Charles McKeown.
The surreal film follows the leader of a travelling theatre troupe who, having made a deal with the Devil, takes audience members through a magical mirror to explore their imaginations.
Canadian actor Christopher “The Silent Partner” Plummer, singer Tom Waits and the late Heath Ledger star in the film, though Ledger’s death one-third of the way through filming caused production to be temporarily suspended.
Ledger’s role was then recast with actors Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell portraying transformations of Ledger’s character ‘Tony’ as he travels through a dream world.
The film received a PG-13 rating for “violent images, some sensuality, language and smoking”.
“…In the present day, immortal 1,000-year-old ‘Doctor Parnassus’ (Plummer) leads a traveling theatre troupe—including a sleight of hand expert ‘Anton’ (Andrew Garfield) and a dwarf ‘Percy’ (Verne Troyer), that offers audience members a chance to go beyond reality through a magical mirror in his possession. Parnassus had been able to guide the imagination of others through a deal with the Devil (Tom Waits), who now comes to collect on the arrangement, targeting the doctor’s daughter (Lily Cole).
The troupe, which is joined by a mysterious outsider named Tony (Ledger, Depp, Law, Farrell), embark through parallel worlds to rescue the girl…”
The film will be released in North America December 25.
