Oscar-Winner Berman Reveals Hugh Hefner
Take a look at the new artwork supporting the Canadian documentary feature Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Brigitte Berman.
“…There’s no arguing that few magazines have had as great an impact on American culture as ‘Playboy’, which helped launch several major salvos in the sexual revolution and broke down barriers about what was acceptable to show and say in print.
“But while the magazine’s founder and publisher Hugh Hefner has a well deserved reputation as a free speech advocate and a man who embraces the good life in every way he can, the person behind the carefully cultivated public image remains a mystery to many.
“Filmmaker Brigitte Berman presents an in-depth portrait of a man who has quietly promoted many causes other than wine, women and song in the documentary ‘Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel’. In addition to chronicling the rise of his publishing empire, the film explores how he’s used his success to promote causes he believes in, such as racial equality, reproductive freedom, First Amendment causes, fighting the anti-Communist blacklist and equality for women.
Created with Hefner’s participation and featuring interviews with Mike Wallace, Jesse Jackson, George Lucas, Jim Brown, Pete Seeger, Dick Gregory and James Caan, Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel was an official selection at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival…”
Rush’s Geddy Lee Acquires Bidini’s Baseballissimo
Toronto-based singer/songwriter Gary ‘Geddy’ Lee, leader of the Canadian rock band “Rush” has optioned, as a producer, the film/TV rights to musician/author Dave Bidini’s non-fiction 2005 novel Baseballissimo: My Summer In The Italian Minor Leagues.
“…In the spring of 2002, Dave Bidini set off for Nettuno, Italy, with his wife, Janet, and their two small children, in search of his favourite summer game, baseball. Nettuno was his destination because this town, south of Rome, has been the baseball capital of Italy since 1944, when the game was introduced by the American GIs who liberated the region. Bidini wanted to spend time in a town where everyone is as nuts about the game as he is, and in Nettuno, they love the game so much that they hand out baseball gloves and bats to children taking their first communion.
“For six months Bidini followed the fortunes of the ‘Serie B Peones’, Nettunese to the core. At the same time he was also learning about his own heritage, having spent his youth vigorously ignoring his Italianness. The result of his summer in Italy is vintage Bidini: a funny, perceptive, and engrossing book that takes readers far beyond the professional sport to the game that people around the world love to play…”
“Ged was one of the first people to really get behind the book, which was a thrill for me, obviously,” said Bidini.
“It’s early days yet, but I think he’s a natural producer. And really, once you’ve helped run one of the greatest and most respected rock and roll bands of all time, the film biz has got nothing on you, I figure.”
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1
Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort’s immortality and destruction — the Horcruxes. On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. But there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart. Meanwhile, the wizarding world has become a dangerous place for all enemies of the Dark Lord. The long-feared war has begun and Voldemort’s Death Eaters seize control of the Ministry of Magic and even Hogwarts, terrorizing and arresting anyone who might oppose them. But the one prize they still seek is the one most valuable to Voldemort: Harry Potter. The Chosen One has become the hunted one as the Death Eaters search for Harry with orders to bring him to Voldemort…alive. Harry’s only hope is to find the Horcruxes before Voldemort finds him. But as he searches for clues, he uncovers an old and almost forgotten tale — the legend of the Deathly Hallows. And if the legend turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he seeks. Little does Harry know that his future has already been decided by his past when, on that fateful day, he became “the Boy Who Lived.” No longer just a boy, Harry Potter is drawing ever closer to the task for which he has been preparing since the day he first stepped into Hogwarts: the ultimate battle with Voldemort.
